State Rep. Mike Hoadley (R-Au Gres) last week spoke in favor of a proposal on the House Floor which would allow eligible high school students the ability to dual enroll at trade schools for credit.

“For too long, college has been pushed as the ultimate option for a high school graduate,” Hoadley said in his speech. “To be clear, there is nothing wrong with a four-year degree. But the reality is, it’s not for everyone. For those of us with grey hair, or no hair, there was a time when high school counselors told us that without a four-year degree, we would be nothing but ditch diggers. But the quiet part they failed to mention is that the heavy ditch digging equipment operator possesses technical skills that may earn him a six-figure salary.”

House Bill 4154 amends the Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act to include trade schools as an option for dual enrollment. Specifically, it adds trade school to the definition of eligible postsecondary institution.

“Our workforce development needs to be more encompassing to include skilled trades. By allowing high school students to enroll in trade schools under the Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act, we are opening doors to real, tangible opportunities,” Hoadley said. “This legislation isn’t just about education—it’s about economic competitiveness and development.”

House Bill 4154 passed the House with broad bipartisan support in a 92-13 vote. Hoadley said he hopes the Senate and governor will support the bill as well.

“I hope that we as elected officials can come together to support students in whatever career path they choose,” Hoadley said. “This is about giving our next generation the tools they need to be successful in the workforce. I hope our colleagues in the Senate and the governor will follow our lead in supporting this.”
