Rep. Smit’s Relentless Effort to Ensure Election Integrity
RELEASE|October 8, 2024
Contact: Rachelle Smit

Thank you for your interest in our nation’s most pressing political crises right now: election integrity.

I want you to know that I take this issue seriously, as a former clerk myself I have experience running elections and firsthand knowledge of how the process works. I am proud that I have been able to fight for election integrity as the Vice Chair of the House Elections Committee.

From that position I have voted “no” more often than I had otherwise thought possible this legislative term. I have voted “no” on the endless stream of laws passed by the Democrats as they seek to criminalize those who want to protect our elections and keep them safe.

I have asked my staff to compile a list of what our office has done on this issue, and these proposed laws, resolutions, and even proposed impeachments, are a guidepost of what good legislation could be if the Republicans ever get back into power.

Now it almost doesn’t need to be said that if we can’t have clean elections, perhaps Republicans will never be in control again. I certainly do not have all the solutions, but what I want to focus on, what I do have control over, is the ways in which good policy and good laws can be quickly passed to clean up our voter file, kick out illegal ballots from elections, and properly investigate serious and credible evidence of systemic voter fraud in our Michigan elections.

I wanted to give you the rundown of my record on this issue, and the history of what I am doing to protect your ballot and secure our elections.

  • SB 259: absent voters; tabulating absent voter ballots received up to 6 days after an election from an absent uniformed services voter or overseas voter; provide for.
    • Text of speech: Thank you Madam Speaker. As a former election clerk, I respect the choices of Michigan voters, but I do have serious concerns about the implementation of Proposal 2 in Michigan – a situation that’s now being made worse by the legislation we are voting on today, which goes far beyond what voters approved in November. Requiring clerks to count absentee ballots that arrive after election day, without a postmark, could allow people to fill out their ballots and send them in after election day is over and still have them counted – which is just senseless. I urge my colleagues to vote no on this legislation.
